Our History

The House of Amos, Inc., a 501(C)(3) non-profit corporation, was founded in July 1996 by Mike Kutka, an Alief, Texas resident and area businessman, with the intent to serve people who lack the basic necessities of life such as food, clothing, education,  and other needs.

Mr. Kutka started the House of Amos by soliciting a small group of volunteers. Through his careful stewardship, the House of Amos evolved from a grassroots organization into a viable and critical resource for area residents. The House of Amos is primarily a volunteer organization made up of volunteers from businesses, universities, high schools, and churches striving to sustain Mr. Kutka’s vision.

The House of Amos exists to serve the community and, in turn, is supported by the community. Support is through individual donations. businesses, foundations, grants and in-kind donations, and food drives.

The name, House of Amos, refers to the prophet Amos who lived in the 8th.century B.C.E. He championed the poor and the needy and called for a reversal of social injustice.
